Alabama Reporting Specifics

Alabama's unclaimed property statutes enforce distinct dormancy periods depending on the asset type. While the standard dormancy period for most banking and investment properties—such as savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, and securities—is 3 years, other obligations mature much faster.

Notably, Alabama requires reporting after only 1 year for wages, payroll, utility deposits, and credit memos. This accelerated timeline requires employers and utility providers to be particularly vigilant. On the other end of the spectrum, travelers checks are not reportable until 15 years of inactivity have passed.

For administrative ease, Alabama allows for an aggregate limit of $50. Individual items valued under $50 may be grouped together and reported as a lump sum without specific owner details, though holders are permitted to report full details for all amounts if preferred.
