Alaska Reporting Specifics

Alaska generally enforces a 5-year dormancy period for major banking and investment properties, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, and securities. This is notably longer than the 3-year standard found in many other jurisdictions.

However, holders must be aware of accelerated reporting timelines for specific property types. Wages, payroll, utility deposits, and notably safe deposit box contents are reportable after just 1 year of inactivity. Life insurance proceeds also have a shorter dormancy period of 2 years.

For reporting purposes, Alaska permits an aggregate limit of $100. Items valued under this threshold may be grouped and reported as a lump sum without detailed owner information, simplifying the filing process for smaller amounts.
