California Reporting Specifics

California's Unclaimed Property Law generally establishes a 3-year dormancy period for most common property types, including savings and checking accounts, certificates of deposit, securities, and life insurance proceeds. This standard period applies to the majority of holder obligations.

However, significant deviations exist. Wages and payroll become reportable after just 1 year, while property resulting from business dissolution or liquidation has an accelerated timeline of only 6 months. Conversely, money orders have a longer dormancy period of 7 years, and travelers checks are not reportable until 15 years of inactivity.

California also enforces a strict aggregate limit. Holders may only aggregate items valued under $25. For any property valued at $25 or more, complete owner details must be provided in the Notice Report. The state strongly encourages holders to provide detailed owner information for all properties, regardless of value, to facilitate reunification.
