Delaware Reporting Specifics

Delaware serves as a critical jurisdiction for unclaimed property, often acting as the custodian for property where the owner's address is unknown for companies incorporated in the state. Generally, Delaware enforces a 5-year dormancy period for most property types, including savings accounts, checking accounts, wages, and gift certificates.

However, important exceptions apply to investment properties. Securities, dividends, and debt obligations (bonds) typically follow a shorter 3-year dormancy period. Holders should also be aware of split reporting deadlines: while most holders report by March 1, banking organizations must report by November 10, and insurance companies by December 20.

Delaware permits an aggregate limit of $50 for items where the owner is unknown or the amount is small. Additionally, specific delivery instructions apply to securities, which must be remitted to the state's designated custodian, currently Wells Fargo Advisors.
