District of Columbia Reporting Specifics

The District of Columbia generally follows a 3-year dormancy period for standard banking and investment properties, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, and securities.

However, holders must be vigilant regarding accelerated timelines. Wages and utility deposits become reportable after just 1 year. Even more critical is property resulting from business dissolution or liquidation, which has an extremely short dormancy period of 60 days.

Conversely, gift certificates have a longer dormancy period of 5 years, and money orders are reportable after 7 years. The District allows an aggregate limit of $50, permitting holders to group items valued under this amount without detailed owner information.
