Illinois Reporting Specifics

Illinois generally enforces a 3-year dormancy period for standard banking properties, such as savings and checking accounts. However, holders must navigate a complex set of rules for other property types.

Notably, wages, utility deposits, and property resulting from business dissolution become reportable after just 1 year. In contrast, money orders and safe deposit box contents have a longer dormancy period of 5 years.

Illinois has a very low aggregate limit of $5. This effectively requires holders to provide detailed owner information for almost all reportable items. Additionally, reporting deadlines vary significantly by industry—May 1 for most business types, but November 1 for banking and financial organizations.
