Maine Reporting Specifics

Maine generally enforces a 3-year dormancy period for most banking and investment properties, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, and securities. This 3-year standard also applies to life insurance policies, though demutualization proceeds have a shorter 2-year period.

Holders must be attentive to accelerated timelines. Wages, utility deposits, and property resulting from business dissolution become reportable after just 1 year. Conversely, money orders have a 7-year dormancy period.

Maine specifically exempts gift obligations (gift certificates) that cannot expire. However, stored-value obligations are reportable after 3 years. The state allows for an aggregate limit of under $50 for property where the owner is unknown.
