Massachusetts Reporting Specifics
Massachusetts generally enforces a 3-year dormancy period for the majority of property types, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, securities, and wages. This 3-year standard is widely applicable across most asset classes.
However, distinct rules apply to certain properties. Contents of safe deposit boxes have a longer dormancy period of 7 years. Gift certificates are subject to specific consumer protection laws; generally, they cannot expire for 7 years from issuance, and those without expiration dates are redeemable in perpetuity.
Massachusetts allows for an aggregate limit of $100. Items valued under this amount may be grouped together and reported as a lump sum without detailed owner information, simplifying the reporting process for smaller obligations.
