Minnesota Reporting Specifics

Minnesota generally enforces a 3-year dormancy period for most banking and investment properties, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, and securities. This 3-year standard is widely applicable across most asset classes in the state.

However, holders must be attentive to accelerated timelines for specific obligations. Wages and utility deposits become reportable after just 1 year, while property resulting from business dissolution or liquidation has an even shorter timeline of 6 months. Conversely, safe deposit box contents have a 5-year dormancy period.

Minnesota specifically exempts gift certificates from reporting requirements (effective since July 1, 2001). For reportable properties, the state allows a relatively high aggregate limit of $100, permitting holders to group items valued under this amount without detailed owner information.
