Nebraska Reporting Specifics
Nebraska generally enforces a 5-year dormancy period for most banking and investment properties, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, and securities. This 5-year standard is consistent across many asset classes.
However, holders must be attentive to specific exceptions. Wages become reportable after just 1 year. Utilities, gift certificates, and credit memos follow a 3-year dormancy period, while property resulting from business dissolution is reportable after 2 years.
Unlike states with a standard per-item aggregate limit, Nebraska allows for a deferral of reporting if the total reportable amount is less than $50. Holders may carry over property year to year until the total report value reaches $50, at which point a report must be filed.
