New Jersey Reporting Specifics
New Jersey generally enforces a 3-year dormancy period for the vast majority of property types, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, securities, and life insurance proceeds. Unusually, this 3-year period also applies to travelers checks, which typically have much longer dormancy periods in other jurisdictions.
However, holders must be attentive to specific exceptions. Wages, utility deposits, and property resulting from business dissolution become reportable after just 1 year. Conversely, contents of safe deposit boxes and gift certificates have a longer dormancy period of 5 years.
New Jersey allows for an aggregate limit of $50, with exceptions for dividends and stored value cards (SVCs). Items valued under this amount may generally be grouped together, but holders should verify specific property type requirements.
