New York Reporting Specifics
New York generally enforces a 3-year dormancy period for standard banking and investment properties, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, and securities. This 3-year standard is widely applicable across most asset classes in the state.
However, holders must be attentive to specific exceptions. Utility deposits and refunds become reportable after 2 years. While general wages follow the 3-year rule, wages designated under Department of Labor regulations have a shorter 1-year dormancy period. Gift certificates and other miscellaneous property often follow a 5-year dormancy period.
New York has a notably low aggregate limit of $20. Items valued under this amount may be grouped together, with the important exception that abandoned securities cannot be aggregated regardless of value and must always be reported with full detail.
