Ohio Reporting Specifics
Ohio employs a mixed dormancy schedule. While standard banking accounts (savings, checking, CDs) and securities generally follow a 5-year dormancy period, many other property types mature earlier.
Contents of safe deposit boxes, life insurance proceeds, debt obligations, and funds held by fiduciaries have a 3-year dormancy period. Holders must be particularly vigilant with wages, utility deposits, mineral proceeds, and property resulting from business dissolution, which have a short 1-year dormancy period. Notably, wages under $50 are exempt.
Ohio specifically exempts gift certificates from reporting. For reportable items, the state allows an aggregate limit of $50, permitting holders to group items valued under this amount without detailed owner information.
