Texas Reporting Specifics

Texas generally enforces a 3-year dormancy period for the vast majority of property types, including savings accounts, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, securities, and life insurance proceeds. This 3-year standard is widely applicable across most asset classes in the state, including gift certificates and mineral proceeds.

However, holders must be attentive to specific exceptions. Wages and utility deposits become reportable after just 1 year. Conversely, contents of safe deposit boxes have a longer dormancy period of 5 years, and travelers checks are reportable after 15 years.

Texas allows for an aggregate limit of $25. Items valued under this amount may be grouped together and reported as a lump sum without detailed owner information. Notably, the reporting deadline for all holders is July 1, which differs from the fall deadline common in many other states.
